Job Function
This role will support the implementation of new laboratory instrumentation, automated test systems, test fixtures, and laboratory infrastructure. This includes process and equipment improvements focused on performance, efficiency, quality, and Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (R&R) of testing. Provides direction and technical advice to laboratory technicians for testing, automation projects, and improvement initiatives. Responsible for design, documentation, equipment sourcing, and validation of new processes and test equipment.
Job Responsibilities
- Develops, designs and/or applies new laboratory instrumentation, automated test systems, test fixtures needed for laboratory testing or in support of upgrading the laboratory infrastructure. Supports the installation, testing and validation of the new and/or revised instrumentation, automated systems, or test fixtures to ensure quality compliance and address user requirements.
- Prepares technical documentation such as engineering drawings, bills of material, standard operating procedures (SOPs) for hardware and software, calibration procedures, comparative testing, and validation of manual/automated test methods, etc.
- Supports existing laboratory instrumentation, automated test systems, test fixtures, and laboratory infrastructure to ensure they meet laboratory needs and user requirements.
- Ensures both new and existing test systems meet safety requirements.
- Updates and maintains automation hardware and/or software as needed.
- For complex systems developed internally, serves as the owner of all associated documentation including drawings, source code, equipment lists, etc.
- Provides direction and technical advice to review requests for new or modifications of existing laboratory instrumentation, automated systems, test fixtures, and/or laboratory infrastructure. Evaluates the request to ensure alignment with operational needs to increase performance, efficiency, quality and Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility of testing.
- Works with global colleagues to drive technical and operational consistency and to maintain efficiency and scalability in global laboratory instrumentation, automated systems, test fixtures, and/or laboratory infrastructure.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering with up to 5 years practical engineering experience, or associate’s degree with up to 10 years HVAC design or automation experience
- Has a basic understanding of the Lean principles.
- Experience with creating technical reports and business correspondence.
- Demonstrated ability to implement laboratory instrumentation, automation tools, and processes and to perform mechanical/HVAC design
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office required, LabView or programming experience preferred. Willingness to learn Excel VBA..
- The work environment will be split between the office and laboratory. The laboratory is typical of an industrial laboratory or warehouse and may be physically demanding at times, with extended periods of standing.
- You may be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
- You may be required to operate a forklift, powered pallet jack, or scissor lift. On site training and certification provided.
